How To Get Your Energy Level Back Up
Your job is most likely going to drain you and, unfortunately, kill your productivity, focus, and drive. The
5 o’clock ‘brain drain’ will waste a lot of time that you could spend doing something you like or working on
yourself. While you can’t charge your company a premium rate for using up your best hours of the day, there are
steps that you can take to raise your energy levels to eliminate this afternoon crash.
1. Exercise – You need to wear yourself out to have more energy. That may sound strange but it’s true. Studies
have shown that exercising can boost your energy more than stimulant drugs can. This should be your first step
in improving your energy – the benefits of improved sleep and a more regulated diet can follow a good exercise
regiment.
2. Improve you diet – This is a big one – your diet really affects how you feel. Eating poorly does your body no
good and the quick spike of energy you feel after some sugar is quickly replaced by a feeling of drag. Also, keep
your fast food intake to a minimum at best. The simple carbs that these foods provide are hard for your body to
digest and provide little nutritional benefit. Make an attempt to plan your meals with slow-burning carbs that
can sustain your energy levels throughout the day.
3. Sleep – You need to get better at getting enough sleep. This can be tough at times because there never seems to
be enough time during the day, but your body does not care – it still requires sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours every
night. Any less than this and your energy levels will drop significantly throughout the day.
4. Go outside – There is some research that suggests that sunlight can stimulate chemicals (chiefly, the chemical
Serotonin) in your brain that are tied to energy production. Additionally, research also suggests that simply
smelling the outdoor air can boost mood and energy levels. While more and more of your time is spent indoors at
your desk in front of a computer screen, make it a priority to get outside a few times each week.
5. Pull out your yoga mat – Yoga stretches have shown to improve posture, breathing, and focus – all important
to your energy levels. The meditative practice of yoga can help you fight fatigue and boost your mood along the
way.
