Don’t Get Absorbed In Your Immediate Surroundings
There’s a problem going around that’s nothing new, but something that certainly hasn’t been solved. How do you compare yourself to the lives of others? Are your problems greater than the ones you don’t have to face? The chances are good that you feel that they are. The problem mentioned above refers to exactly this – you get so absorbed in the problems you face and your day-to-day life that you become unaware of the life outside.
It’s concerning when someone hits a rough patch in life and feels that they can’t get free and this feeling is real for a lot of people. The same routine can have your mind and body yelling to step away from the it all but most don’t know how. While having a structured life isn’t a bad idea, one major issue that comes from it is the inevitable feeling that you’re locked into this routine. A common feeling is one where everything that you’re doing has serious implications on every facet of your life. Everything outside of it is only an afterthought.
This isn’t an attempt to over-dramatize a normal day for us. While it is true that extreme focus and attention has benefits when it comes to job performance among other things, not knowing how to turn this facet of your mind off is the real issue. The ‘living to work’ crowd are those that are most at risk and the ones that most likely need the most reflection on themselves.
The problem here lies in the fact that we don’t know how to separate ourselves from what we’re absorbed in every single day. This is preventing us from seeing what’s beyond the things that are immediately in front of us. Locking into one thing in our lives, not in the context of getting things done, but rather to the point that we are unable to escape when we need to.
Most people would likely agree that being focused and attentive to your work is crucial to performing effectively at your job. Short bursts of intense focus helps us to understand our work and get it completed in a timely and efficient manner. There’s no denying that this is a necessary component to our jobs.
But what happens when you’re locked into this routine and things are falling apart? Do you know how to get outside of the box that you’ve been living in if needed? We often think that everything we encounter in our lives is the only thing that exists, no one feels the pressure or pain that we experience and certainly no one knows deadlines that we must meet. We feel a sense of obligation to our current situation, whether it’s good or bad. However, when it’s bad we don’t leave even though we know we should. We simply don’t consider what’s beyond what is currently in front of us.
This is where you need to push yourself to do something outside of your normal routine. When you’re doing the same things over each day, your body gets used to it and when things go wrong you react with stress. This is only because what you’re doing is what you know to do – it’s your routine. You need to condition yourself to relax in your own setting because you know there’s more out there beyond what’s right in front of you.
